ISLAND THEATRE

TEN-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL

OUR ANNUAL SHOWCASE OF ORIGINAL PLAYS BY LOCAL AUTHORS

Every August, Island Theatre presents THE TEN-MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL, a celebration of ten-minute plays, playwrights, and play writing.

Over three days – and four performances – we present a juried selection of plays by Kitsap County playwrights, directed and performed by Kitsap locals. The plays, which have been selected from approximately 65 entries, are fully staged and performed in the beautiful Buxton Center at Bainbridge Performing Arts.

Prior to Festival performances, we host MEET THE PLAYWRIGHTS, a lively panel discussion and Q&A with the playwrights behind each year’s winning plays. This is the audience’s chance to talk with the playwrights about their plays, playwriting process, and theatre in general.

Each fall we offer the TEN-MINUTE PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP, a small-group, multi-session workshop led by a professional playwright and teacher that guides students through crafting a ten-minute play. Anyone with a strong connection to Kitsap County (because they live or work here) is welcome to submit a play. Our deadline is February 14th each year.

This year’s ten plays by Kitsap County playwrights were selected from over 65 submissions by a panel of theatre professionals, and are brought to life by 24 local actors. The program includes comedies and dramas, fantasy and reality—truly something for everyone, with a new play every ten minutes!

This year’s Festival theme is ESCAPE and our ten playwrights have interpreted that theme in intriguing and surprising ways. For some, it’s an escape from; for others an escape to. For some, it’s a physical escape; for others it’s psychological. For some, escape is an act of desperation; for others, a move of powerful self-assertion.
